Fair Isle Tam Knit-Along FAQ

I’m new to fair isle – do you have any tips for me?

Yes we do!

Right Side
Wrong Side

When working from charts, carry color not in use loosely across WS of work but never over more than 5 sts. When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under color in use on next st or at center point of sts it passes over. The colors are never twisted around one another.

Is there somewhere we can post images of our progress?

There is a Flickr group available . Feel free to post your images there and view photos of other folks’ progress. To use Flickr, you’ll need a yahoo id, which is free and easy to create.

What materials do I need to make the tam?

You’ll need 5 shades of Patons Classic Wool (100g/3.5 oz; 223yd/205m) or another worsted weight yarn.

Set of 5 size 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. St markers.
Note: Set of 5 needles works best for even stitch distribution and keeping work in quadrants.

Can I use circular needles?

Yes, a 16” circular needle of the appropriate size can be used. Keep in mind you will need to switch to double pointed needles at the top of the hat after several decreases have been completed.
