Sizes 3¼ mm (U.S. 3) and 3¾ mm (U.S. 5) knitting needles or size needed to obtain tension. Cable needle. 3 st holders.

ABBREVIATIONS
C5F = slip next 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at front of work. K2, then K3 from cable needle.
C5B = slip next 2 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work. K3, then K2 from cable needle.

1st row: (RS). P3. C5B. K2.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd and 7th rows: P3. K7.
5th row: P3. K2. C5F.
8th row: Purl.
These 8 rows form Cable Pat.

BACK
**With MC, cast on 121 (131-137-147) sts.
1st row: (RS). K3 (0-3-0). *P3. K5. Rep from * to last 6 (3-6-3) sts. P3. K3 (0-3-0).
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more, then 1st row once.
With A, beg with purl row, rep last 2 rows once. Break A.
With MC, beg with purl row, rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 3½ ins [9 cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Proceed in Cable Pat as follows:

FRONT
Work from ** to ** as given for Back.
Cont even in pat until armhole measures 1½ (-2-) ins [4 (4-5-5.5) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Neck opening: Next row: Pat across 48 (56- 56-64) sts. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
Next row: (WS). Cast on 3 sts. Knit these 3 sts. Pat to end of row. 51 (59-59-67) sts.
Next row: Pat to last 3 sts. K3.
Cont in pat, keeping 3 sts at neck opening in garter st, until armhole measures 4½ (- 4½-5) ins [11.5 (11.5-11.5-12.5) cm], ending with RS facing for next row.
Neck shaping: Pat to last 13 (13-13-14) sts. Turn. Leave these 13 (13-13-14) sts on a st holder.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 28 (36-36-43) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to shoulder, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.
With RS of work facing, slip next 13 (13- 13-14) sts onto a st holder. Join yarn to rem sts and pat to end of row.
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 10 rows. 28 (36- 36-43) sts.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures same length as Back to shoulder, ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off.

SLEEVES
With MC, cast on 59 (67-67-75) sts.
1st row: (RS). Purl.
2nd row: P3. *K5. P3. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more, then 1st row once.
With A, rep last 2 rows once. Break A.
With MC, rep last 2 rows until work from beg measures 7 ins [18 cm], ending with a 1st row.
Place markers 3½ ins [9 cm] above cast on edge for turn-back.
Reversing WS to RS, proceed as follows:
1st row: (RS). *P3. Inc 1 st in next st. K3. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * to last 3 sts. P3. 73 (83-83-93) sts.
2nd row: Purl.
3rd row: (Work 1st row of Cable Pat) 7 (8- 8-9) times. P3.
4th row: Purl.
Cable Pat is now in position.
Cont in cable pat, at the same time, inc 1 st each end of needle on next and every following 4th row to 119 (119-129-135) sts, taking inc sts into pat.
Cont even in pat until work from beg measures 22½ (23½-23½-24½) ins [57 (59.5-59.5-62) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Cast off in pat.

FINISHING
Pin garment pieces to measurements. Cover with a damp cloth leaving to dry.
Collar: Sew shoulder seams.With RS of work facing and MC, P13 (13-13-14) from Right Front st holder. Pick up and purl 19 sts up Right Front neck edge. P43 (43-43-45) from Back st holder, dec 0 (0-0-4) sts evenly across.
Pick up and purl 19 sts down Left Front neck edge. P13 (13-13-14) from Left Front st holder. 107 sts.
1st row: (WS). P3. *K5. P3. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows until Collar measures 4 ins [10 cm], ending with a 1st row. Change to A and beg with a purl row, cont in ribbing for 2 rows. Change to MC and beg with a purl row, cont in ribbing for 6 rows. Cast off in ribbing.
With WS facing, sew 3 cast-on sts at Left neck opening in position to WS. Place markers 1¾ (-1¾-) ins [4.5 (3-4.5-3) cm] down from cast-off edge at each side of sleeve. Sew in sleeves, placing rows above markers between cast-off sts at Front and Back armholes to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams reversing seam for cuff turn-back.
