TENSION
18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with larger needlesin stocking st.

Rep last 2 rows (K1. P1) ribbing for 2 ins [5 cm] ending on a 2nd row and inc 15 (15-20-21-24-25-26) sts evenly across last row. 74 (98-107-122-133- 146-159) sts.
Change to larger needles and proceed in pat as follows:

HOOD VERSION
Hood
: With smaller circular needle, cast on 113 (113-123-153-153-153- 153) sts. Do not join. Working back and forth across needle, work 6 rows (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back.
Keeping cont of rib, cast off 12 (12-12- 14-14-14-14) sts beg next 2 rows and inc 9 (9-8-9-8-9-8) sts evenly across rem sts of 2nd row. 98 (98-107-134- 133-134-133) sts.
Change to larger circular needle and proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). *K2 (2-3-2-3-2-3).
Work 1st row panel pat. Rep from * to last 2 (2-3-2-3-2-3) sts. K2 (2-3-2-3-2-3).
2nd row: *K2 (2-3-2-3-2-3). Work 2nd row panel pat. Rep from * to last 2 (2-3-2-3-2-3) sts. K2 (2-3-2-3-2-3).
Panel pat is now in position.
Cont in pat, keeping cont of panel pat, until work from beg measures approx 6½ (7-7½-8-8--8½) ins [16.5 (18- 19-20.5-20.5-21.5-21.5) cm], ending with RS facing for next row. Keeping cont of pat, cast off 3 (3-3-4-4-4-4) sts beg of next 12 rows. Cast off rem 62 (62-71-86-85-86-85) sts.
Sew shoulder seams. Fold hood in half and sew center back hood seam.
Matching hood seam to center Back neck edge, sew bottom of hood between ribbed sections to Front and Back neck edge. Sew cast-off edges of ribbing to sides of placket opening. Sew side edges of ribbing to cast-off sts at bottom edge of placket opening.

CREW NECK VERSION
Sew right shoulder seam.
Neckband: With RS of work facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit 13 (15-17-22-22-22-22) sts down left front neck edge. K10 (10-11-10-11-10- 11) from front st holder. Pick up and knit 13 (15-17-22-22-22-22) sts up right front neck edge. Pick up and knit 25 (27-28-41-42-43-42) sts across Back neck edge. 61 (67-73-95-97-97-97) sts. Beg on a 2nd row, work 3½ ins [9 cm] in (K1. P1) ribbing as given for Back ending with RS facing for next row.
Cast off loosely in ribbing.
Sew left shoulder and neckband seam. Fold neckband in half to WS and sew in position.

BOTH VERSIONS
Place markers 2¼ (-2½--2½- -2½) ins [5.5 (5.5-6-5.5-6-5.5-6) cm] down from cast-off edge at each side of sleeve. Sew in sleeves, placing rows above markers between cast-off sts at Front and Back armholes to form square armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams.
