Set of four size 4 mm (U.S. 6) double-pointed knitting needles or size needed to obtain tension.

k2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together.

Note: When working from charts, carry yarn not in use loosely across WS of work but never over more than 5 sts.
When it must pass over more than 5 sts, weave it over and under color in use on next st or at center point of sts it passes over. The colors are never twisted around one another.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ). Numbers for each size are shown in the same color throughout the pattern. When only one number is given in black, it applies to all sizes.
With MC, cast on 56 sts. Divide sts into 18 sts on 1st and 2nd needles and 20 sts on 3rd needle. Join in rnd. Place marker on 1st stitch for beg of rnd.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * around.
Rep last rnd of (K2. P2) ribbing for 1 inch [2.5 cm].
2nd rnd: Knit.
Knit Chart I in rnds to end of Chart, reading rows from right to left and noting 28-st rep will be worked twice.
Break A and B.
Chart I is shown on page 32.
Next rnd: With MC, knit.
Next rnd: (K5. K2tog) 8 times. 48 sts.
Knit 3 rnds.
make heel
Slip last 12 sts of last rnd and knit first 12 sts of next rnd onto needle for heel, having contrast marker in centre. Slip rem 24 sts onto 2 needles for INSTEP.
With wS of work facing, work back and forth across heel sts on 2 needles as follows:
1st row: Sl1P. Purl to end of row.
2nd row: *Sl1P. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until heel measures 21/2 ins [ 6 cm], ending with a RS row.

Shape instep
With RS of work facing and 1st needle, pick up and knit 9 (9-11) sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle K24 across instep sts. With 3rd needle, pick up and knit 9 (9-11) sts along other side of heel. Knit first 7 sts from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 7 sts from heel onto beg of 1st needle.
56 (56-60) sts are now divided as: 16 (16-18) sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 24 sts on 2nd needle.
instep Decreases
Next rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: Knit. 3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
Next rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 48 sts divided as: 12 sts on 1st and 3rd needles, 24 sts on 2nd needle.
Knit in rnds until foot from picked up sts measures 6 (61/2-7) ins [15 (16.5- 18) cm].
Shape toe
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1. 2nd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
Next rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 20 (20-24) sts.
Knit sts from 1st needle onto 3rd needle.
Graft 2 sets of 10 (10-12) sts tog for toe (see Diagram on page 32).
